Switch it up is our transition booklet, developed following requests from schools for something to support children with SLCN moving from primary to secondary school. The activities take a language based approach to transition. Children work through the booklet in the months leading up to transition, with their TA or with parents, at their own pace and in whichever order suits them.

Children have fed back that it has helped them feel more ready for secondary school, reduced their anxiety and helped them ask any questions they were unsure of. They have also loved taking their completed ‘Switch it up’ booklet home and to their secondary school where they usually share with the SENCo.

  • The transition booklet has four main sections:

    • The first section contains a brief communication passport for children to share interests and the ways they communicate. This is particularly useful for their new school to be aware of.
    • Section two has activities to get children ready for secondary school, such as finding out about their school and how secondary schools work. This can help identify gaps in children’s knowledge and help them understand what to expect.
    • Section three is a more detailed ‘All about me’ section for children to share information about themselves.
    • Section four is all about getting organised and is full of quick tips and checklists.
    • There is extra space for notes and some pages to log any words children need to learn to help with the transition process.
